I run this exact check on every system I touch before recommending an upgrade. Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, and play in whatever part of the game actually stresses your system, a busy open world area or a heavy fight, not the main menu where nothing is rendering hard. Watch both the CPU graph and the GPU graph at the same time. The relationship between the two numbers, not either number alone, tells you what is actually limiting your frame rate.

Signs of a CPU bottleneck

Low GPU usage despite low FPS

If your GPU sits at 60 percent or lower while your CPU pins near 100, the GPU is sitting idle waiting on the CPU to prepare the next frame. This is the clearest CPU bottleneck signature I look for.

1% lows that feel worse than the average FPS suggests

CPU bottlenecks tend to show up as inconsistent frame pacing more than a flat low average. Strategy games and open-world titles with heavy simulation are the most common offenders here, since they lean hard on a handful of CPU threads.

Signs of a GPU bottleneck

GPU usage near 100 percent

GPU usage at 95 to 100 percent with CPU comfortably below that is the healthy, expected state for most builds at 1440p and 4K. This is not a problem to fix, it is just your graphics card doing the heavy lifting it is supposed to do.

FPS scales with resolution and settings

If dropping resolution or settings recovers your FPS in a fairly linear way, that confirms the GPU as the limiting part. A CPU bottleneck would not respond the same way to a resolution drop.

What resolution and settings change

Higher resolutions and heavier settings push more work onto the GPU while leaving CPU demand mostly flat. That is why the same system can be CPU-bound at 1080p and GPU-bound at 4K. If you are testing for a bottleneck, always test at the resolution and settings you actually play at, not whatever happens to be open.

I have seen builds get diagnosed as having a “bad CPU” when the real issue was testing at 1080p low settings, a scenario almost nobody actually plays in once their card is mid-range or better.

Issue: CPU usage spikes to 100% only in specific areas of a game.
Fix: This usually points to a CPU-heavy scene, like a crowded city or a big fight, rather than a hardware fault. Compare usage across multiple areas before concluding anything.

Issue: Both CPU and GPU usage look moderate, but FPS is still low.
Fix: Check for a background process eating resources outside the game, or a frame rate cap set somewhere you forgot about, in the game settings or in your GPU control panel.

Issue: GPU usage reads near 100% but FPS still feels choppy.
